Briones
Associate Professor of Dietetics
Esperanza Briones is Professor and Coordinator of the
Dietetics Program in the College of Health Sciences and
Human Services at the University of Texas - Pan American.
She obtained her Ph.D. in Human Nutrition from Michigan
State University. She received a pre and post doctoral
training awards from NIH and Mayo Clinic Foundation to work
in the Atherosclerosis Research Unit, Department of Medicine
at Mayo Clinic for three years. Her first academic position
was at Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health
Professions in Boston, and then to the University of
Illinois in Chicago. In both positions, she had clinical
appointments. She came to UTPA in 1994. She has published in
the areas of lipids and lipoprotein metabolism in diabetes
and other conditions, and presented her research studies in
national and international scientific meetings. Her current
research involves medical nutrition therapy in Mexican
American diabetic adults for the purpose of delaying and
preventing various medical complications.
